  • Babbel: These apps are available for 11 languages, and contain 2,000-3,000 vocabulary words per language. All words are accompanied by images and pronounced for you by native speakers.
  • Spanish Touch Trainer - Platform: iOS/Android - Learn how to construct proper sentences in Spanish and expand your vocabulary with this interactive app. Feels like you’re playing a game on your smartphone, when you're actually learning Spanish.
  • Spanish Tutor 24/7 - Goes beyond the simple talking phrasebook or flashcard programs, providing a set of interactive study tools that helps users learn Spanish. Also available for French: French Tutor 24/7.

CULTURE:
  • Culture Club - Sponsored by the National Capitol Language Resource Center - find resources to help you teach the culture of your target language. You can sign up for email updates, if you want.
  • ePals - Here educators can safely connect to classrooms from over 200 countries and territories to set up opportunities for learning.
  • Foreign Language Video Instruction is a collection of video clips in which native speakers elaborate on a wide variety of topics about their culture, family, daily life, and more. Each video clip is accompanied by a description of its contents, the country of the speaker, and additional grammar and vocabulary notes. These videos are produced by the ViewPoints Project of the Five Colleges of Ohio consortium.
  • French Artists- breaks down art by time periods. See the famous works of art and learn about the artists and the time period.
  • HowStuffWorks - videos and resources for Mexico, France, and Spain--holidays, history, etc.
  • Palace of Versailles. Go to France with Google Maps to take a tour of this famous French palace.
  • Spanish Proverbs and Sayings with their English equivalents.

LEARNING TOOLS
  • Digital Dialects features free games for learning phrases, numbers, vocabulary, spelling, verb conjugation and alphabets in 80 languages.
  • Duo Lingo - free website and app for learning languages for kids and adults. It offers courses in Spanish, French, and other languages. Progress through a series of lessons based on skill level. Beginner: Students can use the apps to do lessons disguised as games. In each lesson, players get four “lives.” Get an answer wrong, you lose a life. Run out, start the lesson over again. Expert: Have students work in groups to compete for the most points!
  • Imendi helps people to learn basic vocabulary of foreign languages. It uses simple game mechanics where you pair meanings in selected languages.
  • Languageguide.org - Explore the world of French and Spanish vocabulary and grammar in this sound integrated guide. Touch or place your cursor over an object, word, or phrase to hear it pronounced aloud. Prove your vocabulary mastery by completing challenges.The French guide includes a list of readings.
  • Learn A Language - There are interactive audio/visual flash cards to help you learn a foreign language; includes hundreds of free language-learning lessons, games, and activities.
  • LyricsGaps A fun method to learn and improve your foreign languages through music and typing in song lyrics.
  • Memrise - an interactive website to help you memorize vocabulary.
  • Podcasts
    • Easy French Poetry - Poems are read twice: once slowly and then at a normal pace. Podcasts also sometimes include the life of the author, explanations of vocabulary and analyses of the text using simple, everyday French. Recommended for intermediate learners.
  • Surface Languages provides free online language learning resources. It is completely free. There are thousands of phrases and hours of audio spoken by native speakers along with flashcard, multiple choice and language learning games.
  • Verbs Online - Improve your verb conjugation skills in one of these six popular languages.

NEWSPAPERS and NEWS ARTICLES:
Spanish Newspaper- El Gancho is an online magazine for students- all in Spanish
Newsela - takes news articles from various feeds and provides quizzes and writing prompts to measure comprehension. The cool thing is that all articles can be adjusted to different reading levels. Most of these articles can be presented in Spanish. They also have Spanish Text Sets, which are a collection of articles grouped by different topics.
Newseum: Today's Front Pages - View the front page of newspapers from around the world.
TTEspañol – the daily news site for tweens and teens – Stories are selected by students working closely with professional journalists and can also comment upon these stories.


REFERENCE
DICTIONARY
Dictionary/Pictionary- Online for Spanish, French, German, Italian, and English. This is so easy, and great for first year students. There are flashcards, fill-in the blanks, and even word scrambles.
Forvo - the world’s largest pronunciation dictionary. Look up any word and hear it pronounced by an authentic native speaker.
ENCYCLOPEDIA
INFOHIO has both a French and two Spanish online encyclopedias. (You may need a username and password for home usage- please contact your Media Specialist or stop by the Media Center for a card with the info):
  • Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos. Online Spanish language encyclopedia that is appropriate for younger Spanish-speaking students and students just learning the Spanish language.
  • Gran Enciclopedia Hispánica. Comprehensive Spanish-language encyclopedia from World Book Inc. and Hispánica Saber. It is written from a Latin American perspective and the content updated monthly.
  • L'Encyclopédie Découverte. Online French language encyclopedia that is appropriate for younger French-speaking students and students just learning the French language.

SEARCH ENGINES:
Yahoo en Español- is a site which looks for items of interest that are written in Spanish. Sites that are written in English--even if they are of Hispanic interests, will not be included.
French Search Engines - this is a HUGE list of search engines for French teachers and students.


Translation-
Linguee is a contextual translation search engine that uses human expertise to turn the entire Web into a concise and free online dictionary. The service is available for bidirectional translations in five languages (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German). When you search for a word using Linguee, you will be given actual examples of how the term is used so that you can determine the exact meaning.
Vocal Translator - Type in what you want to say and then choose which language you want for the translation and the lovely lady will say it for you!


Typing
TypeIt allows you to easily type accents and other characters. You can edit your text in the box and then copy it to your document, e-mail message, etc.

Video
  • NASA STARS - A new monthly video chat - streamed live in Spanish - is aimed at promoting awareness of NASA's diverse career opportunties. The program is targeted for Spanish-speaking middle and high school students in STEM classes, Spanish classes and Spanish clubs. Students can watch the live stream and tweet questions or teachers can register their classes to participate as a remote live audience.
