First Step: Download Calibre
E-Book Management- download Calibre.
Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. It has many features divided into the following main categories:
  • Library Management
  • E-book conversion
  • Syncing to e-book reader devices
  • Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form
  • Comprehensive e-book viewer
  • Content server for online access to your book collection

Basic Facts:

There has been a great blog created that addresses many issues related to using E-Books in school. It also has information on accessing FREE books for your readers.   • Kindle Library Books- Here's how to check out a free e-book from your local library:
    • Grab your library card and head to your local library's Web site. Each library's site will differ, but if there's a dedicated e-book section on yours, go there.
    • Find the book you want to check out, and add the Kindle book to your cart. If you don't see the option for Kindle available, you can still get the e-book on your device using these instructions.
    • Once the check-out process is complete, you'll be redirected to your account to finish. Choose to read the book on your Kindle, then connect your device to Wi-Fi to download it.
    • Go to OVERDRIVE to find a library near you.

  • Free ebooks - Download app, then join for free. Download five free books a month.
  • Google Books is a great site for finding books and magazines online. Some are available to purchase, and some are even free to download. You can organize your own collection or set up lists of theme specific books. This is a great teaching tool as well as a personal tool.
  • Librophile has a great selection of FREE E-books to download (Audio Books are included!)
  • Many Books has lots of free ebooks, pre-formatted for reading on your computer, PDA, SmartPhone, iPod, or eReaders including the Kindle.
  • Online Books Page has over 25,000 books online that you can read!
  • Open Library- allows readers to read E Books online. It is just like reading a book--the pages turn, the pictures are included and it is great! I read Little Women the other day!!! MANY books from which to choose!!! FREE!!!
  • Library Book App that can be installed on your IPad. You can then go to Overdrive and you can download audiobooks and ebooks from the Ohio eBook Project (on loan so you cannot keep them forever) but FREE and tons of brand new titles.
  • Project Gutenberg- download over 33,000 free ebooks to read on your PC, iPad, Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPhone, iPod Touch, and more!
  • Read Print- Free online books, plays, poetry...
  • University of Chicago Press- Get a free e-book every month from the University of Chicago Press. Also, on the website you can order new books and sign up for email notification of books in your field.
